Every day 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases, equating to 2.3 million deaths per year. In 2016, 178 Australians were fatally injured. In 2015/16 the United Kingdom saw 144 fatal injuries and in 2015 the United States of America recorded 4,836 fatal incidents and Canada 852 workplace deaths.
The human cost is too great and the International Labor Organization (ILO), is prioritising health and safety. This year as part of their international safety and health agenda, ILO is supporting countries in optimizing the collection and use of occupational safety and health (OSH) data.
The scope for countries to implement national notification and recording systems that assist with this data collection includes the recording of four activities:
The fact that commuting accidents have been positioned within this global scope for health and safety indicates that national policies will now need to reflect this change especially incorporating the investigation of commuting incidents. Eliminating or minimising barriers to compliance will be required to ensure notification and recording systems are implemented effectively across nations.
From an organisational level, ensuring the safety of commuting and travelling employees is becoming more important. Incidents are on the rise and companies are looking for solutions that enable them to monitor the safe whereabouts of their commuting employees whilst automatically keeping an audit history.
SafetyIQ logs commuting history and keeps an audit trail of travel times, locations and incidents. When a commuter misses a check-point, management is immediately notified. Management can quickly respond to notifications and all communication is logged. In fact, in the event of a disaster, you can search for a location and all employees who have checked-in, or are due to check-in to that location will be identified, giving management data at their fingertips.
Responsiveness and data-driven decisions are key to improving workplace safety. It’s your duty of care to ensure the health and safety of your employees, including those who commute each and every day. The question is, how will you do this? The answer needs to consider that your employees will arrive home safely to loved ones at the end of each day.
Ensuring the safety of your commuting and travelling workforce is easier than you think. Watch our 2-minute online DEMO to see how.
