Given the nature of Novus Fuels’ geographically diverse operations, their workers frequently undertook solo, long-distance driving between sites, in remote, rural and isolated areas. While these journeys were essential for business operations, they also presented significant risks, and the visibility of their geographically distributed team was a key challenge with their current processes.
Understanding the potential dangers associated with these trips, Novus took the initiative to seek a better solution to improve the safety and well-being of their workforce. Traditional means of managing mobile worker’s safety such as paper-based forms and spreadsheets were insufficient and reactive in nature. Thus, Novus looked to implement a proactive approach, leveraging technology to provide full visibility of personnel movements, real-time risk management, continuous communication, and immediate support in emergencies.
To ensure the safety and well-being of their mobile workforce, Novus sought out SafetyIQ and its advanced journey management solution. SafetyIQ’s solution provides a central source of truth for personnel movements, enabling easy planning with detailed journey routes, check-in times, and locations visible on a centralised dashboard.
Dynamic risk assessments play a crucial role, empowering proactive risk management. Workers conduct assessments before journeys, with automated approval for low-risk trips and manager notification for medium to high-risk submissions. This streamlines the process and increases risk awareness, fostering a safer work environment.
A key aspect of the Journey Management Solution that helps Novus provide a safety net for their mobile workers is the automated check-in and escalation processes. Mobile workers are required to check in at predefined points along their trip, typically every two hours and in line with fatigue breaks. This feature ensures that their managers are aware of their progress and well-being. In the event a worker misses a check-in, the escalation process is automatically triggered, notifying their managers to immediately contact the worker and confirm their safety. This timely response significantly improves the visibility of a geographically distributed workforce and reduces emergency response times, decreasing the likelihood of fatalities.
